Wall & Landscape Transformation

From a damaged fence and an unusable slope to a two-level garden with built-in lighting.

This rear garden had two problems: a boundary fence that was past saving, and a sloping plot that left the owners with almost no usable outdoor space. Our brief was to make the boundary secure and permanent — and to turn the slope into space the family could actually live in.

The starting point

The existing timber fencing was damaged beyond repair, and the garden sloped away from the house in one continuous bank — no flat areas, no places to sit, and a boundary that needed replaced rather than patched. We cleared the site and excavated the slope, cutting the garden into two level terraces.

Walls, levels and groundwork

In place of the old fence we built a brick boundary wall with piers and coping — a permanent, secure boundary that will outlast any timber replacement. Between the two new levels, a brick retaining wall holds the upper terrace, with built-in steps connecting the zones. Lighting was planned from day one: recesses for wall and step lights were built into the brickwork as it rose, not bolted on afterwards.

Two zones, one garden

The finished garden gives the family two distinct, usable areas: an upper patio terrace by the house for dining and entertaining, and a lower landscaped level framed by the new walls. Brick steps with contrasting treads link the two, and the whole space now works as hard as the house it belongs to.

Lighting that was thought through

Because the lighting was designed into the build, the result looks effortless: recessed wall lights wash the brickwork, step lights make the level change safe at night, and the garden stays usable — and good-looking — long after the sun goes down.
